The late Georg Neumann always emphasised that people looking for the "real" U47 sound would just have to go and buy a used one, Neumann never tried to make a sound-alike copy. However, they have done much research in the field of "tube sound", and their modern tube mics, like M149, are hybrid (tube-semiconductor) devices modeled to have similar distortion characteristics, but less noise, a variable pattern, and the capability to handle higher sound pressures. If you?re looking for a similar vintage sound but want to spend less money, try the Nemann-Gefell UM57, or the CMV563 with M7 capsule. The circuit is basically identical to the U47, the early types of which came with an M7 capsule, but the Gefell mics use the (still) well-available EC92 tube. There is also the american company Wunder Audio, which manufactures fine "remakes" of the old long-body U47 at a price which is in the range of a battered old specimen, but they come with a guarantee, and long, trouble-free life expectancy. You might even get a matched stereo pair! Nikolaus L?we
