Absolutely, positively not. It is impossible to tell. On the opposite side you can often tell when an engineer used bad analog summing or console. But a mix can sound small and edgy regardless of which console or summing you use.

I wish that Resolution magazine published reprints of articles on their site. I wrote a two-part series on summing which many people have told me is the definitive article on the subject.

In summary: Digital summing is "perfect", perhaps too perfect. In analog, it's not the summing that does the trick, but rather the coloration of the circuits. In some cases, some of the crosstalk or distortion of the good analog boards seems to actually enhance the stereo separation and depth. But is definitely, 100% a case of coloration, and I've proved it.
