The New Zealand government's anti-piracy proposals have moved into law after having been rushed through the final stages.

The Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill, particularly Section 92A, has caused immense controversy in the country but has now cleared the third and final stage ahead of its implementation.

Section 92A originally placed the onus on ISPs to disconnect repeat infringers but this met with fierce opposition when it was mooted two years ago. This mean it had to be redrafted by the commerce select committee.

The New Zealand Herald reports, “While the ability for copyright holders to apply to have repeat offenders disconnected remains in the legislation, it will not come into effect unless after two years it is shown that other less severe sanctions are ineffective.”

ISPs will have to send warning letters to those suspected of infringement. They can be disconnected for up to six months and could face penalties of up to $15k (?7k).
