are the mic pres on the 400 te same as the 800?
Pre's on the FF400 are a different design (more gain available), and they are digitally controlled instead of using an analog knob. I think they sound slightly better than those on the FF800.

Really better huh? whys that? more clean or what? when you say digitally controlled you mean the gain on them?
Since I don't have a way to measure "sound quality" or a definition of "clean" etc., I'd tend to be careful with statements of this nature. The FF400's preamps have slightly better tech specs than those of the FF800 (and yes, gain is controlled digitally), but whether or not this is audible is a question that can only be determined individually, using your ears. I must admit I've not done such a comparison. But there is nothing significantly wrong with the sound of the FF800's preamps... cool
