JORIS VOORN - From a deep place
Rotterdam-based producer Joris Voorn is back with yet more brilliant emotional techno and this time he tops The 20 chart with a superb new album on his own label Green.Following on from his recent EP ?When It Was Day We Made It Night?, ?From A Deep Place? as expected, fuses Voorn?s love of Detroit techno with modern house and tech house rhythms. It has been three years since Joris Voorn first rose to prominence with his debut album ?Future History?, and since then he has become a well-respected producer and DJ (he was picked by Belgium?s top techno club Fuse to mix a CD for them last year). Here he showcases a broad range of styles and sounds, including a surprising funky soulful house side with
?Early Bird?, which uses filtered disco loops and bongo-led house beats.Voorn even flirts with liquid drum & bass on
?My People?, which sees broken beat loops and vocal snips drift on a sea of pads and floating harmonies.Deep techno is of course Voorn?s forte and it appears on this LP in abundance.
?The Deep? cascades through complicated chord structures, whilst
?A Thousand Lost Souls? is a depressing and slow journey via dark caverns and soaring synths.
?Revelation? in part sounds like an old house tracks from the early 90s, and makes clever use of soulful vocal snippets and cymbal crashes, as well as provide a never-ending breakdown.Three melancholic electronic soundscapes appear on ?From A Deep Place?, including the spaced-out wonder of
?Another Place?.
Clearly Joris Voorn has targeted this LP at the home-listening market, and all the better for it.He has revealed a fresher more unique side and a capability to push his music beyond deep Detroit-inspired techno.
?From A Deep Place? represents his ongoing evolution as a producer extraordinaire.
