This is a quick mailbag-bloglike-FAQ, released in an effort to set expectations, share information, and express opinion. The specifications are estimates and subject to change.
Release Date
The release date is ASAP. Blending audio physics, real-time DSP, and 3D graphics has required innovation without a roadmap. Unforeseen hurdles, insanely complex problems, and numerous glitches have been tackled and resolved. A few remain. Development steps are underway to polish the reverb and get it into your hands as quickly as possible. Current graphics hardware continues to push BionicReverb to performance levels without peers. You will not be disappointed.
AVEX, RAVEX, BionicReverb
AVEX was the original project name. RAVEX is BionicFX?s real-time DSP engine that performs audio processing on 3D graphics hardware. RAVEX is an acronym for Revolutionary Audio Video EXchange. The addition of R to the name marks both the circular path of audio through the system (360 degrees) and the radical approach of calculating audio effects using parallel processing methods.
BionicReverb is the first audio effect using the RAVEX engine. The effect is a stereo reverb for VST compatible audio hosts, such as Cakewalk Sonar, Steinberg Nuendo and Cubase, Ableton Live, and Adobe Audition.
Specifications & Requirements
Follow the minimum requirements specified by the audio host. In addition, a 6-series or better NVIDIA graphics card with 256 MB of video memory, and a motherboard with PCI Express are recommended. Exact requirements will be published when the new website goes live. A user forum to share experiences and configuration tips will be available. NVIDIA is the only GPU manufacturer that provides true 32-bit processing through all stages of the graphics pipeline. If preparing a budget or planning, start comparing 6 series or better PCI Express cards.
Effect Count
Max effect count depends on a number of things. The most influential factors are whether you are using a PCI Express machine and the amount of video memory on your 3D card. Each instance is taking up about 15MB of video memory. If your video card has 256MB of memory, then you should be able to run 15-20 instances (@96 kHz). The memory management will be optimized after the first release. This technology is not a stop-gap solution for a sub par machine. If your system doesn?t run 3D games well, then you probably won?t get the performance you are hoping for. On the other hand, a fast machine with a decent graphics card will run more instances of effects at lower CPU% than normally possible.
Latency
The RAVEX engine adds 2ms of latency. However, the real source of latency when using convolution reverb is the fixed block size required by the convolution algorithm. The sweet spot on your system will be determined by how many effects you are running, type of motherboard, CPU, video card, and a number of other factors. In heavily loaded systems that are maxed out, you will probably find a fixed size of 4096 or 1024 to be a good starting point.
Cost
Free. BYOV. Bring your own video card. The first release will be free to download from this website.

Re: BionicFX
