Build your own synth with Korg and littleBits
No solder or wires with DIY Synth Kit

littleBits Korg Synth Kit
Japanese synth giant Korg and littleBits, the open source library of electronic modules (or 'Bits') that snap together with magnets for prototyping and learning have partnered up to launch the new littleBits Synth Kit. Designed to allow users to create brand new sounds and build their own electronic instruments, the new kits will be available in the US in late November for $159. Price and availability in the UK will be released in coming months.

The kit is intended to democratise synth-building, enabling curious hobbyists and musicians to build their own sound-creating devices. It should also be a great tool for the teaching the basics of synthesis. The new Synth Kit includes an assortment of 12 electronic Bits modules that instantly snap together with magnets to create circuits like those used in Korg’s famous analog synthesizers. Modules included in the Synth Kit are power, oscillator (x2), MS-20 filter, envelope, delay, keyboard, micro sequencer, mix, split, random, and synth speaker. Because it uses the same connectors as all the other littleBits components, it's possible to prototype much larger circuits that include motors, LEDs and various other elements available in other kits. The best bit of all is that no wiring, soldering or programming is required.

“We’re excited to work together with industry leader KORG to design and launch the new littleBits Synth Kit,” said Ayah Bdeir, founder and CEO of littleBits, MIT Media Lab alumna and TED Senior Fellow. “Our goal is to break technology down to its fundamental parts and put the power of electronics in the hands of everyone. This new Kit is the most easy to use, high quality, analog modular synthesizer in the world, and is designed to inspire people of all ages to unleash their inner rockstar”.

If you're new to electronics, the Synth Kit includes a project booklet outlining step-by-step instructions for 10 projects, as well as custom accessories that transforms the Synth Kit into a ready to use performance station that can connect to recording or live sound equipment. Instructions for sound-altering circuit designs are also included, covering pitch sweeps, white noise, key player, sequencer control, frequency modulation, random voltage, filtering noise and echo and delay.
